id like some input on hanging a new sheetrock ceiling, while exposing the original beams. im thinking of using 2×3 or something similar to run along the existing beams (flush with the bottom of the floor boards on the upper level) and hanging the sheetrock on the 2×3.. do you follow? this will give me space to rerun the electric.. however the ceiling also has cross supports inbetween the large beams and i am wondering if there is a secret to working around them.. should i just do what i can to cut around them? id like some input from someone who has done this or someone who has seen it done. any help is appreciated. thanks.

  1. Haven’t we seen this movie before?

Cash-rich company offers more than $1 billion for a Silicon Valley Internet company with no profit started by 20-somethings backed by a blue-chip venture firm. The deal is blessed by any number of industry analysts, including Henry Blodgett, while competitors scramble to strike similar deals lest they get left in the dust.

  2. Google today released a mobile version of Google Maps for Palm OS Treo smart phones. The free, downloadable application provides directions, local search, live traffic updates and satellite imagery.

Google Maps for Treo offers real-time info for over 30 major U.S. cities and has been optimized for the Treo 680, 700p, 650 and 600.

Earlier this year, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the company would be concentrating more of its efforts on mobile products. In July, Google released Google Maps for Mobile, which debuted the live traffic data feature mentioned above.

Google already makes several of its products available via cell phone, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google SMS, Google News, Google Personalized Home and several search features.
Google began testing mobile AdWords in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany in September.

  3. I agree with Victor – you can’t expose the joists if your floor sandwich needs to have a fire rating. Find this out before you do anything. You might be able to expose the joists if you add sprinklers but that is expensive.

  4. If you do it, you are basically stripping the structural floor members of their fireproofing.

Remember that 5/8″ sheetrock (which I think is what is required on ceilings) is firerated for 1 hour. That gives the firemen 1 hour to put out a fire before the floors cave in on themselves.

I love the idea, but I don’t know if its worth the risk. What does everyone else think?

  5. Good idea! I haven’t done this, but have the same situation in my English basement. So you would have a 3″ deep crawl space between two beams? What was the original purpose of the cross beams? Maybe if they are structural, then you would have to work around them with your sheet rock, or then replace them with smaller horizontal beams that you could cover with sheetrock after consulting with an engineer as to whether this is possible.
