I bought a 1BR apt that has an updated kitchen but a painfully small sink. I don’t know what the previous owners were thinking, but I can’t even wash a saucepan in there. There is definitely room on the counter to have the sink extend back further to the backsplash, as well as the depth required under the sink.

So my question is, the countertops are granite and I’m wondering if it is possible to have someone come in and recut the granite to accomodate the larger sink that I would love to buy. Any advice would be very welcome!

  1. I just had a house call made to cut down a granite backsplash. They were able to remove, cut and reinstall on site. For a sink, they may have to recut in the shop. I used Wholesale Marble and Granite in Brooklyn. They also did my orginal install.

  3. I would think that you could remove the old sink and then someone could cut a larger hole onsite based on the template for the larger sink. I would guess the new sink would have to be an overmount, meaning the lip of the sink covers the edge of the granite. An undermount or flushmount looks really nice, but it may not be possible to get that even, beveled finish outside of the shop.

I used Acme Marble in Brooklyn for a number of projects–some things went well and some didn’t. You may have a problem finding a contractor because it’s a small job and you’re not buying any stone in the process. Good luck.

  4. sounds very complicated, as to cut a slab you have to use water saw. all things can go wrong – cracking, breaking etc.
they usually do it in the shop. if it is not a big piece-think new counter.
    good luck
