Any feed back would be deeply appreciated.

  1. Well, thanks again for all yr comments. My husband diagnosed the problem and it was in the waste pipe.It was leaking and a few other pipes need to be tightened. We went to an hardware store and bought the part for $5.99. He will fix back the ceiling and my tenant will be happy.

Glad it was only a minor problem.

  2. Hey, PC

You very well may or most likely will need a Plumber. I made mention of that in my first comment.
As I stated before in a previous comment. Sometimes the downspout from the roof travels inside the house between the outside wall and the inside wall. If that pipe is cracked inside the wall, it will show up somewhere in the house.
If that’s the case it will happen only when it rains.
You’ll know by toucing the water stained wall or cieling for a few days after the rain. The stain will remain damp to the touch for a day or two after it rains.
And sometimes when there is a hole in the roof (on one of the sides, around a vent pipe, or a shaft etc.) the water travels down a wall and hits a beam. Then travels across the beam until it drips and enters a room in your house.
Or if it travels down a pipe when it hits an elbow or a bend it will drip down into a room.

If the stain is wet even when it doesn’t rain for a while, it’s a definitely a plumbing problemT
Then like Rick wrote and you just stated, you’ll have to take down a part of you cieling and get a flashlite and look in side.

    Good Luck

  3. Thanks for all the comments. But I first must say there are no windows on that side of the house and the kitchen drain pipes on the 4th floor are above the leak on the 3rd floor. I don’t understand how the leak from the roof would surpass the 4th floor and just go to this area on the 3rd floor. we’re thinking of pulling out more of the ceiling to see if we can see other areas where the leak would be. I don’t think caulking the windows would help because no windows are on that side. Wouldn’t I need a plumber? Still not sure who to call? A new roof has been put on the house. We just want to get it fixed properly. My husband is a handyman but we just don’t seem to know where the leak is coming from.

  4. Thanks Prof Kontzamanis, you’ve enlightened us.
Maybe brownstoner can have a “Let’s ask Nick” forum where you chat live with brownstoners

  5. I forgot to mention in my previous comment, (2cnd comment 9/19 7:19). That leaks in floors (walls cielings etc), beneath top floors or each other, frequently come from 2 main places.

    1. It could be traveling from the window or window sill directly above the leak area.
Sometimes the seal (usually calking) around the window breaks or falters. Thus when it rains the water gets in and finds an opening below its entry.
You simply need to calk the perimiter of your window (s).

    2. Or, it could be comming in from the brick wall above or around the leak area.
The mortor (cemment) between the bricks (when old) gets porous and it absorbs water from rain.
When this occurs once saturated, the water then leaks into the house.
That’s when you need to do pointing on your brick walls.

  6. Here we go again Nick with your propaganda.
The issue is on the 3rd floor and not the 4th. and the prectical knolwedge you inflict on this board is petty and childish.
Like I said before, take out an ad and allow your customers to make recommendations.
