We are in the early stages of planning a main kitchen for our parlor floor. We intend to put a peninsula out from one wall with an overhang & bar stools along one side. My question is – how much overhang is normal/good? If we have standard 24″ deep cabinets accessed from one side, is a 12″ overhang the right amount going out from the back where the stools are? Is more necessary or is this sufficient? We don’t have a lot of flexibility but i don’t want to end up with something stupid.
Also, is the standard bench height (using IKEA base cabinets approx 30″) ok? I don’t want to have to resort to a split level top…
Thanks!
A 12 inches overhang is quite fine. My over hang is 12.5 inches and the counter height is 36.5 inches. I am very comfortable with it. I think it is a good overhang already.
bar stools
i have 14-15″ overhang which i like but it could be less. dont go less than 12″ i have ikea cabinets -i think the counter height is 36″. just make sure you get 24-26″ stools-not 28-29
also depends on the material for the countertop. if you are using granite, it is too heavy and brittle to withstand too large of an overhang. i just put in an island with a curved overhang on one side, and i think the granite people told me that 14″ at the largest “radius” of the curve was the limit.
ours is 9″ from the base cabinet and seems fine, but i wouldn;t go less than that. make sure its supported properly, particularly if its hanging over a ikea cover panel. the height of the ikea cabinets is sufficient for an overhang. ours is very comfortable. good luck.
