We’re just beginning the process of replacing our windows and front and back doors. Our kitchen is on the garden level with a door to the backyard. I’d like to let in as much light as possible to the kitchen while still ensuring our safety and keeping bugs out. What’s the best setup to do this?

  1. I am working with a custom cabinet maker and his company has fabricated many wooden doors. He has experience working on brownstones and recently did the windows and all the woodwork for the new wine shop on Vanderbuilt Ave and Bergen. You can reach me at 347-365-9575 or at toniashake@aim.com. Tonia. MP Millwork Custom Cabinets.

  2. A single lite door allows the most light transfer into a space ( as opposed to a divided lite french door). If the glass is less than 16″ from the floor it must be laminated safety glass which is available as an insulated unit. A screen door can be hung on the same jamb as the door to keep bugs out. For the maximum ammount of light have the door made to the closest to the masonry opening(probably 40″)

  3. I’d have to say avoid Park Slope Glass. I dealt with them once on a small job and they were ok, so I decided to use them again. An absolute nightmare; took months for them to finish a TINY job, multiple appointments, all broken, then they didn’t even finish the job. Really, really poor.

  4. I would not use Park slope glass they have not too great a reputation. I recomend Kolbe windows http://www.KOlbekolbe.Com if it is wood you are interested in Type in Kolbe in the brownstoner a blog will come up. What had you in mind If it is safety Laminated Glass With 5 point locking You can design anything with Kolbe & get screens also or order screen seperately if cost is an issue. What is your budget? contact Heights Historic Windows & doors see there add to the right. very good quality & has excellent references.

  5. Id call park slope glass and windows..718-768-4066..theve been around for 34 years…they are very professional and will recommend repair first..replace second. They are really great to deal with and not pushy.
