I have a Bed-Stuy brownstone with the baths in the hall oneach floor – with single pocket doors for each bath.
One of the baths has a door that won’t open all the way – it gets stuck with about 10″ to go. This is a problem for us, because we are about to have the bath tiled, and the plumber needs to remove the tub – and right now the opening isn’t big enough.
The door appears to be on the track – I can’t figure out what to do to get behind it – to remove the door – which seems like the only way to clean out whatever’s blocking it.
I can’t even figure out how t was installed in the first place.
Maybe there’s some molding on the door frame that’s holding it in – that’s what it looks like. Help!
Any ideas on how to get this door to
flyingelephant,
Either side should work.
Hey Terry, Well now you’re thinking! Yes you can make the hole from the inside. Remove the toilet too. The room should be empty since you plan to tile the floor & walls. Be sure to use wonderboard too!
Yes, Rick – it’s Terry. I wouldn’t have thought of that baseboard idea – good one, Bob. I’m wondering about Bob’s hole idea – would it also work to do the hole from the inside? No baseboard to remove, and the area will be tiled over, anyway. The only problem is that there’s a toilet up against the wall, so the area’s a little tight to work in…
Southslope – thanks for your ideas. The door is on rollers, not hanging. Hopefully, the hole solution will keep me from needing to remove the door altogether.
Terry, that you : ) ? !
Yes I think you have lots of plaster crud in the track. I like Bob’s idea of removing the baseboard from the hall & making a hole to clean it out. That should work.
Is the door hanging from hardware mounted to the header (newer)or are there rollers under the door that ride on a track(older)? If it uses rollers you may need to remove the door stop then tilt the door out. If it is hanging from the top there will be a mechanisim to release the door from the rollers.
Most likely plaster has fallen behind the door. You may be able to slide a yardstick in alongside the door and move the debris to gain a few inches of opening.
I had the same problem several years ago. Debris (IIRC broken plaster) had built up inside the wall (as a result of slamming tghe door shut.We removed the baseboard on the wall utside the bathroom, opened a hole in the plaster, and cleared out the accumulated crud. The door has worked fine since. The hole was small enough so that the baseboard covered it, so no plaster repair was needed.
