This problem has been troubling me since the weather got warmer. Whenever I’m in my house (Garden and Parlor floors with large yard) I feel like I’m getting bitten by something. It isn’t painful, just a little itch, but i never see anything on my skin or flying or jumping around. I have a dog, but it definitely isn’t fleas (I know what they look like). At first I thought I was imagining it, then I thought it was dry skin, but it only happens at home. I keep my house pretty clean and shower a lot, so I don’t think it is a cleanliness problem. I have experienced no-see-ums in the Caribbean and that is kind of what this reminds me of. Could it be bedbugs? I’ve heard they’ve made a resurgence in NY. Are they visible to the naked eye? Is there some other 100-yr-old house problem that I don’t know about? It is getting very annoying. Help!

  2. 1. do you live near corn or any other kind of field? No, not that I know of
    2. what kind of flooring? carpet? Lineoleum and Carpeting (mostly carpeting)
    3. What kind of baseboards? wood? plastic? Wood

I am unable to catch one of the buggers, because I’ve never been able to see one.

  3. We have these pest in our home also. My husband took a flashlight and with the lights off we looked sideways through the light beam and saw thousands of a tiny bus flying around. We purchased a Hunter Air Purifier tonight and upon turning it on we could see with the flashlight that they were being pulled into the purifier. We have had our home sprayed by professionals and also used mycodex, steri-fab and bombs but the problem continues. My husband is going to purchase a microscope so he can look at the samples he is collecting. We live in northern Indiana and it has been extemely cold here, but the pest problem continues.

  4. I have found an re-tired entomologist from the Univ of Minnesota that is willing to assisit us in this battle. In fact, the challenge interests her. These are her questions. IF you care to answer them I will forward them to her.

If you are able to obtain a bug(3) save them in rubbing alcohol or vodka. Even squashed specimins are wanted. One kind of trap is to leave a little spider’s web or dust web, then see if you can catch some there.

  5. if anyone ones to email me about this problem its fine.Yes these people are right what they are saying
it has nothing to do with pets. I started with this in 1990,the tiny insects come in around may or
or Sept, only for 8days they stick on the skin and
you cannot get rid of them a nurse told me to use
baking soda, and I found out about a product called Kleen free Enzyme by Natural ginesis 615-790-6122
i bought some at the end of last year so I have not
used any but this year I will if I have to, I will
try it now I have lots of allergy problems to, and
its true others will think you’ll nuts, the doctors don’t know, and no lotions work or creams
plus no chemicals work now i was told about this product that it kills the mites by causing them to prematurely shed their exoskeleton, rather than
attack their nervous system, that is what chemicals does is attack the noseeum’s nervous system therefore it does not work. It makes sense
so this May I will try it if I need to,I don’t have any problem in the winter. I think they come out when they want to they live i think by water and come on trees, and they fly in when doors are open I saw some that came off a tree it was thousands of them they were in the air they had just came off a tree and the sun was out so i think that helped me to see them better, they are very tiny, and next thing I knew they were in my place on my skin they are hard to get rid of now I hope I have helped some one by saying all this I do pray some one will find the answer to these tiny insects. Yes at night is bad, you can’t sleep. in the day yes i do feel them some but not as bad as the night and yes a few does go in the car with you and I can not understand it. It could be that some of us is alleric to them I feel the itching and a little burnings from them.
yes I used bombs inside and all the spraying nothing worked. If only something could come out on the market, that we could use on the skin to keep them off, I am allergic to strong sprays i can not use them. They are not mosquitoes, are bed bugs, no, or bird mites.
well only one winter years ago my husband at that time came in with wood to put in fire place and the noseeums came off of it i guess, and it gave my skin a fit, and it was hard to get rid of them, and my husband was not allergic to them. I notice when they come in they only die out in 8 days. In the main time they give the person a fit with there skin.
in the summer the weather was so hot last year I had no problem with them.I am in NC.

  6. In the past few months I have been bitten nightly by some sort of insect that I can’t see. I’m wondering if it might also be no-see-ums. Whatever they are, I can’t see them, even while I am being bitten. I have what look like little specks of blood laying beneath the skin on my legs, and there have been times when my chest and neck areas look like hell because of the bites.

I live in Phoenix and have two cats. They are strictly inside cats, but do, on occasion, lay by the screen of my sliding glass door. Although the woman across from me sits in her home with her door flung wide open and no screen at all, she has not had any such problems with biting insects (go figure).

A few months ago I started to notice that when I would sit at my computer I would feel little bites all over my legs. I really didn’t pay too much attention, although I found it pesky. Since I have always been one who likes my showers in the mornings, I would get up from the computer, brush my teeth, wash my face and go directly to bed. I can now look back and see that the insects that were biting me at my computer were being carried with me into my bedroom. The only relief I have is from taking a good hot shower every evening before entering my bedroom (wish I would have started this a long time ago). I wash and dry my hair and lather up every inch of my body. When I am done blowdrying my hair, I rub an Aloe Vera lotion over every inch of my body (this seems to help more than not – it is made by a company called Fruit Of The Earth – the lotion itself is called “Aloe Vera Naturals” – their website address is http://www.fote.com). No, I don’t work for them!

I am just about at my wit’s end with these insects and their bites. I have had the bug man come in and do a spraying and have used foggers on my own twice since then. None of it has seemed to help. I am using Off! Skintastic Insect Repellent with Picaridin (5%) and Inert Ingredients (95%). I have thrown an abundance of towels, sheets, comforters and clothes away because of this and find myself doing laundry two to three times per week and taking other items to the dry cleaners a couple of times a week. I have tried natural sprays and natural flea and tick sprays (out of desperation).

Back to the cats. I’m wondering if they might be infested with these little buggers from sitting near the screen??? I have tried to take them to the groomers, but they will have no part of it. The reason I’m bringing up the cats is that my female likes to get up on my shoulder while I am at the computer, but it seems that the bites get worse around that time, so I’ve had to curb any holding of my cats (sad to both them and myself).

My main problem is that I don’t know what to use on myself or my apartment or my cats that isn’t harmful, and that will FINALLY bring this to an end.

I have spent hundreds of dollars in the past weeks and don’t really want to keep throwing good money after bad, but if you have a suggestion that you feel would be foolproof, I am ready to pursue it.

I would appreciate any comments and suggestions.

    Thank you,

    Paula

  7. I live in Los Angeles and my theory is that what I have in my apartment is also no-see-ums. They’re flying, hang out in my plants (which I overwater sometimes, hence moisture) and bite me mostly at night (well, that IS when I’m home). I, too, thought they might be fleas or mites but found no evidence of either. So far I’ve taken to spraying the ones I actually see with bug spray, as well asa light spray on the offending plants, but that’s all I’ve thought of so far…. help!?

  8. We’ve got the No-See-Ums too. They’ve taken over our house. And I’m the only one they bite. My feet blow up like balloons, and my legs itch like mad. They only seem to bite my legs, though. And the doctor says I’m allergic to their bites.

Please if anyone figures out how to get rid of them, please let me know at woehrles@mail.com

    Thank you
