I just moved into a railroad apartment that I love, but I’m having fantasies of tearning down the wall between the living room and dark middle room. The wall is drywall and as far as I can tell is not weightbearing and was added relatively recently. Does anyone have a sense of what it would cost to take the wall down? It’s about 5 ft wide by 9 ft high. (The room is wider than 5 feet, but I’m excluding the width of the doorway since that’s already empty space).

  1. Sounds like this RR apt is in a wood frame house or probably has wood joists. In either way, the wood joists deflect and may actually now relying on that ambiguous wall for some bearing. I’d consult with an engineer before I make the ultimate reno
