Advice on Pickling (bleaching?) Wood floors
We are putting in new floors on the garden floor of our brownstone. Because it’s a relatively dark floor we thought to use light wood. We’ve heard you can “pickle” the wood to achieve a near white wood but still have grain. Has anyone tried this or seen this? We’d be keen to do it…

Advice or sources greatly appreciated!
Thanks for the suggestions. I am also going to check out Beech or Ash reclaimed timber. I am hesitant to have it feel like a faux finish.
I worked in a Madison Ave antiques store in the mid 1980’s and the owner of the store pickled all the wood floors in the showroom. Just the mention of pickled wood floors and I’m on a time trip.
You can also pickle the wood with a very watered down white paint, and then poly over that. I would experiment with various stains and paints using scrap flooring until you get the look you want.
It’s your house, so whether it screams the 1980’s or the 1880’s is your choice. Do what makes you happy.
I just saw pics of G Paltrow’s house in London and all her floors were “pickeled” (the mag’s words). It was very light and gorgeous. Wish I could find a link but it was a UK mag.
I’d buy cheaper and light oak and then you just use a pickeled stain.. try a test strip yourself. Go to lowes or whereever and buy a piece of wood and a small can of minwax or other stain. They have the pickeled stains right next to the other reg stains in the aisle
I thought the 80s were back?
No pets, but small child. Do you mean it’s the poly that shows the scratches and it’s more apparent on a lighter wood?
Does anyone have this kind of floor treatment and likes it?
PICKELED FLOORS SCREAM THE 80’S. THEY ALSO SHOW SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES ( ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE PETS.
