How to find Property Line info?
I’m a renter, and it pretty much looks like the next door neighbors have built a fence over their alloted property line (into my backyard). I’d like to find out what the true property line is before pursuing this further. The space is valuable to me since my backyard is tiny already, and next door…

BTW, my LL is a space cadet (lazy), and will give me free range to investigate and rectify if needed…I’m in Brooklyn – where do I go and what do I ask for? Thanx!
Well, the LL faxed me C of O – which suprisingly can also be found online at nyc.gov. I measured out the area in question, and according to the CO my hunch was correct, they definitely built into the property by approx 4ft, which in a tiny backyard is HUGE! Before even investigating, I had asked them (neighbors) if I could move it – they said they’ll “think about it” but it was basically a “no”. Silly, b/c the area is just full of debris. Needless to say, I’ll be moving the fence back to the approx correct spot.
your a renter .
mind your business !
im not giving back what i worked so hard for to steal ..
actually, the survey won’t necessarily prove your point. (i’m dealing with this exact issue right now but from the reverse– i want to make sure that when we build our new fence we build it in the exact right place and not an inch over into our neighbors’ property)– anyhow, if you call a surveyor, they’ll tell you that the only way to be sure about where exactly your property lines fall is to have a surveyor come out and STAKE the property– that is, put stakes into the ground to mark where the lines actually fall…
First stop would be the LL. Ask her if she has the survey that was done when she purchased the house. The property lines would be there.
If that doesn’t work, I think you can go to DoB and make copies of the building plans. These are drawn using the survey so they will reflect the property lines.
Hope that helps.
