Are there any regulations about the amount of light or noise that can spill over from a neighbor’s townhouse backyard into yours? Our pain-in-the-butt, entitled, pompous ass neighbor (sorry but, I am so upset) has now outfitted his illegal 2nd story extension with porch lights that also light up our backyard. He also has installed an outdoor speaker through which he has begun to pipe baseball games and music for the edification of the entire neighborhood. It just seems that everytime he does something on his house, it has to impinge on the neighbors lives.

  1. I can sympathise, have had the noise pollution issue in Cold Spring NY condo as well to the point were I am sleep deprived and has even gone to the point it is affecting my health. Keep trying the 311 system in writting, keep writting letters, health dept, police, file an official complaint,DEpt of environmental protection and if all else fails sue for big bucks. Personal nuisance, deprivation of habitability – property devaluation, disturbance of your peace and enjoyment of your home. In the City you actually have more of a chance of getting something done since the Quality of life laws were instated.

  2. 311 is certainly one of the best things to come down the pike in the city. Call 311 whenever the music goes beyond accepable hours and volume. Multiple phone calls and neighbors also calling is a great help. The local precinct will go after habitual offenders and also will contact you with an update of what is being doen about the problem. You can also do it annonymously oif you like, but use 311.

  3. You could try building relationships with officers at your local precinct house and/or getting involved with the precinct community council. This may be more of a long-term solution (you’ll probably need to work on other folks’ issues before you can credibly ask for support for your own) but it could provide a great base from which you could take action in the future — as well as allowing a positive outlet for your understandable frustations about living next door to such an ass.

  4. There is safety and power in numbers. I’ve had to deal with a number of block nusance issues. Try discussing it with them. Better yet, try to rally a number of people to approach this person. When people (including the cops) hear from more than one person about a problem, they take it much more seriously. If it’s just you, then they tend to write it off to you being “overly-sensitive” or not cut out for city life.

    Good luck.

  5. I have had the same problems that you have with neighbors and noise ( loud music ) . Do they think they live on an island?! It blows my mind that some people can show such lack of consideration to others. I was able to curb my problem by talking with them, and calling 311 when I had to. When our block was really bad with loud Salsa music late at night I had friends on the block call 311 too. The police will respond better if they get a few calls about the same house. Getting to know my neighbors helped too. Over time I became more than the guy who just calls the cops on them.

  6. First, ask him to turn the music down and turn off the lights if they bother you at night (or redirect them…)

If that does not work, you can cal 311 re the noise at least. Nuisance laws would ultimately give you some legal grounds for complaint if it was noisy enough.
