Anyone out there know anything about repairing original brownstone doorknobs? We have some beautiful old ones, glass and brass, in varying states of disfunctionality. Ideally, I’d like to find a way to repair them or replace internal parts rather than chuck them for new ones.

Anyone have any advice? Or know someone who does this kind of work?

  1. You can replace the post or stem (I think that’s what you call the metal piece that goes through the door. It sounds like the grooves on it or the knob are stripped. If it is standard youcan buy at a hardware store or go to the antique shops on Atlantic – they would also have replacement locks.

  2. in response to first post, i wish it was only cleaning. the doorknobs themselves are lovely, but the ancient guts inside have problems. in one case, for example, the doorknob never stays on, no matter how hard you tighten that little screw. to second poster, thanks bob, i’ll try them.
