Guys,

Sorry for double post (did not allow for comments initially).

I am having IKEA kitchen cabinets installed in my three apartments. The kitchens are really small. They are L-shaped, approx. 8feet by 8 feet.

My contractor friend gave me an estimate of about $10,000 to install them — that does not include countertops. I did get another estimate from another contractor and the other guys told me $2,200 for everything. Incredible price discrepancy.

Any ideas on how much this costs? Please help…

Thank you.

  1. I have been installing IKEA kitchens for 3 years.
    the price should be
    90 per base/wall cab
    130 per pantry
    +any custom work
    toe kick
    crown
    handles ect.

  2. Anon 11:59 AM,

I have an apt. kitchen I’m renovating that needs a new counter top around the kitchen sink, an over the sink cabinet and new kitchen sink pipes.
Would you provide your email address?

    Thanks,
    Vin

  3. I had ikea cabinets installed recently and my guy did it for $1,400, which included assembly, countertop installation and some plumbing changes. So I think $10K is ridiculously high.

You should check out the ikea recommended installers though. Their price was a little lower, but couldn’t do the plumbing change I wanted, which is why I went with my own contractor.

  4. I simply don’t understand the comment about cabinets being hung in 1/2 hour. That’s ridiculous. I agree with mcteague that Ikea is only as good as the person installing it. Also, brownstones are so uneven and the floors so kooky that care should be taken to level them and also to reinforce them. Having done quite a bit with Ikea I would not tak take the lowball offer. Just my two cents. Also, Ikea recommended is not a guarantee of great service. I think there was a thread about this over on apartmenttherapy.com a while back. Not everyone was giving glowing reviews.

I’m not saying that this should definitely cost you $10k. Just be careful and know that the final product will look good ONLY if the person installing is careful and conscientious.

  5. Everyone, thank you soo much for your help! I don’t know what I would have done without this forum. Any recommendations for IKEA installers?

    Thank you.

  6. did you try getting quotes from some of the IKEA recommended contractors? i agree w/ previous posters, $10,000 is really crazy. we put our IKEA cabinets together ourselves easily, and our contractor hung them in about 1/2 hour.

  7. HELLO! You soooo need to call Henry347-881-5241,,,he’s fantastic…does this painting and more for us…we’ve got to bstones, our;s and our rental – point is…Henry is MORE THAN LIKELY not charging you 10K for this…

  8. i would say the first quote is somewhere approaching highway robbery. the lower quote seems closer if not low. if a contractor has guys who are familiar with ikea, it should not take more than a couple of days per aprtment, including toekicks and panels. the problem with ikea is they will look like shit if they are not installed properly, in my experience, and beautiful if done with care and experience. so if you get lower quotes, it might be a good idea to see previous ikea installations from that guy/gal to make sure the quality doesnt suffer. ikea makes it easier, but good carpentry is good carpentry.

  9. Thank you for your response. The prices that I am quoting are for all three apartments. It also includes getting them out of the boxes and putting them together. The contractor on the higher end said it will take him 8 or nine days and they are 3 guys and he charges $42 per hour per person? Is it reasonable or not?
