Okay it is not horrible but I want the orginal orginal glass exterior door… Two brownstones down a SRO has the orginal door and I asked the owner/landlord how much to sell or if they would be willing to trade doors (I offered to pay the installation and give them my door). They gave me a price of $10K (?!?!?)

My question: what is the going rate for original brownstone doors? $10K seems VERY steep! http://us.a2.yahoofs.com/users/43b31fa8zcbc74767/f81b/

  1. Orginial poster here. Uh… I was simply trying to TRADE doors at first. As I orginially stated there is NOTHING wrong with our doors, they are just not orginial and not glass. They have a door I value and want. I asked the people who lived there did they care for their door and I got resounding shrugging of shoulders. $10K is RIDICULOUS when I got a price of $500 from Eddie’s… Our contractors can strip and finish them. The SRO comment was that they are not owners of the property. We are. Moreover the brownstone is for sale and I HIGHLY doubt they will get what they are asking so the $10K price is if I can get it, why not.

  2. Yeah, furthermore, the more correct doors your block has, the better for all property the property values. Get the original style replaced, and please don’t encourage your neighbors to remove theirs.

  3. Of course $10k is an absurd price. But you posed an absurd question in even asking for the door. I guess we can infer that you believe an SRO is a lesser use, so you deserve their better door.

  4. There have been so many postings on salvage doors, you should check the archives. Yes, try Eddie’s salvage, there’s one on Tompkins Ave, one on Malcom X, they always have a selection (if they’re open when you go, they can keep odd hours), Olde Goode Things on 24th St. in Manhattan (with a warehouse in PA where they can check for more sizes and styles), Demolition Depot on 125th St. in Manhattan.

A new set of doors will start at 5k, probably, and that doesn’t always include installation or moldings!!!!! I’ve had quotes from 5k to 15k.

  5. I was in the same boat. First off, carry around the size doors you need at all times. You may be able to modify a slightly larger pair.

Check Eddie’s regularly as well as Demolition Depot and Olde Good Things.

$20 is unusually cheap for a set of doors–at other salvage places you could pay $200 to $1500 depending on condition. And then you will likely need to restore them–strip, paint or stain, etc.

Still, to get new ones made will be AT LEAST $5k so you will be ahead and have historic doors.

I love Eddie’s but I had a very bad experience with one of their refinishing guys-Mike I think. He was expensive and didn’t do a great job. But I think the guys who do work there are essentially independent contractors so you may have better luck with someone else.

My doors were a funny size and style so in the end I ended up having them built by Heights Woodworking. They did a really good job.

  6. I second Eddie’s. There’s also a salvage place on Stuyvesant, I think (someone correct me if I’m wrong). They have loads and loads of stuff. The Victorian, on Tomkins, also has some doors.
