We are converting a window in our parlor floor kitchen into a door that would lead down to our backyard. Does anyone have experience with this? Marvin wants $5000 for the door, screen door, transom and installation, which struck us as pretty high. (We need the transom because the windows are enormous (8 ft?) and are framed with original, elaboratley carved molding that we don’t want to lose.) We would really appreciate any suggestions for doors, contractors, etc. Thanks.

  1. Hi anonymous at 23,2006 07:36 PM, I love what you did with your kitchen and doors. Am I correct that your kitchen is on your parlor floor? I want to do a similar kitchen in my brownstone and I am wondering what are the dimensions of your kitchen?

  3. the floors are original to the house. they are oak with mahogony and walnut trim. hence the reason we put in the walnut cabinets–keeping the feel of the 1873 home, but keeping in modern with the stainless. the counters are 2 inch carrera marble also in keeping with the period, it is the same material as used in the fireplace mantel.

    good luck.

  4. Hey Anonymous at February 23, 2006 07:36 PM – What I could see of your door in the My Brownstone section looks good – but on another topic – did you have the floors on the parlor floor installed – or were they there already? Are they maple? The floors on my parlor floor are pine sub-flooring that I’d like to lay parquet over – and the look of your floors are what I’d like to achieve.

  5. If you ride down 4th Avenue there are a plethora of people who do it. I can’t remember our people because it was 4 years ago. If you go to Brownstoner’s “My Brownstone” section and look at the posting with the greeen Naguci couches you will see our kitchen with our doors in the background.

  6. if you have no doubt about liking the door then with the installation that seems about right- is someone going to carefully replace and refit the original moldings? that is very time consuming but when it’s done it looks beautiful- we used pella but paid extra beyond their install for the molding detail. if you want me to send photos of how ours turned email me. the door w/transom cost 3k and the install was around $800 and then unfortunately i can’r remember how much the molding refit cost.
