Does anyone have advice on the safest and best types of locking mechanisms for iron doors? I live on the garden level and our current iron door (followed by a low-security partial glass door) has the key-in/key-out locks, which are relatively secure in terms of break-ins but pose a fire hazard given that we need a key to leave as well as enter. The best solution I can come up with is a keyless touch pad lock for the iron gate. I don’t feel comfortable using a deadbolt that flips side to side since hands/implements could reach through and unlock the door.
Any advice? Do most people with garden level iron doors have a key in/out system or is there another style I don’t know about? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
We have the same issue too. We were thinking of having a welder come in and weld brackets to secure a piece of plexiglass across the middle 1/3 of the door so that we can install a deadbolt that flips on the inside. It would still allow light through, and if it is made large enough, someone wouldn’t be able to reach around. Either that, or install a full sheet of plexiglass backing on the interior side of the security door. Let me know what you end up doing as I’d love to know too 🙂
You are refering to a double cyclindar door which is a violation. I think about everyone I know has this set up or else they have this large half circle of iron welded to the gate that makes the lock out of reach for bad guys. We have a large key chain that remains on the door knob at all times in case of fire.
I have this same issue and am not sure what to do!
Thanks for the post.
