Can anyone recommend someone expert at refinishing kitchen cabinets? My (galley) kitchen is 25 years old, and the cabinets are beginning to show some wear and tear. They are quality solid oak, so it doesn’t make sense to replace or to reface them. I live in Carroll Gardens. Thanks.

  1. OE, you have a point, the kitchen is 25 years old, but the wood is in nearly mint condition as I have no children (only a 5 lb. yorkie), and I’m the only one who uses the kitchen. Also, the kitchen is quite small, barely 8 feet wide and maybe 13 feet long, and the cabinets run on one side of the space only. They are “traditional,” so they don’t look dated (to my eyes anyway). If it weren’t for the areas where the finish has worn away (especially around the sink area, pots & pan storage, etc.) and the finish having generally darkened somewhat over the years, the cabinets are perfectly fine. If I were to renovate the kitchen using the quality oak cabinets I have now, the cost would be at least double, if not triple, what I paid 25 years ago. I think that a new finish and new hardware would freshen it up. This is a project I would probably undertake in the spring. Anyway, many thanks for the input, folks, it’s much appreciated. And thanks for your contact info, Valerie!

  2. I am an artist, wood finisher, and decorative painter also located in Carroll Gardens. I`ve done lots of wood restoration work, some right here in the neighbourhood. Give me a call and I can come look at them and give you advice and an estimate.

  3. Hey there – we have a man living with us for a few months who would be PERFECT for this job. He is a fine wood furniture builder and also the owner/director of a place called artfarm (artfarm.com) in Nebraska. He is on sabbatical right now and looking for odd jobs. He is working on refinishing our stairs right now and they are gorgeous. Wonderful attention to detail and knowledge of wood and finishes. email me and I’ll get his email and forward it to him. good luck!
