My husband and I just bought a brownstone in Carroll Gardens and before we move in we would like to do some work to the place. I was hoping to get some recommendations of Architects and/or Structural Engineers and some thoughts on the benefits of going with one over the other. Your website isa great resource, but I notice on the left hand side you don’t have any links for architects. This would be very helpful for someone like me.

  1. You should call this Architect, Jill Bouratoglou, 917.309.3682. She, along with her husband, designed and built their new home, in Brooklyn. One of my neighbors had her design her duplex in Park Slope and I think they are initiating construction. My neighbor said she was inexpensive, very professional and had excellent creative results

  2. It really depends upon what your goals are for renovating your home. At one end of the spectrum is the need for basic permits, minimal expense and minimal work. You might do the work yourself and only need an expeditor’s services for the permits (if you need them at all!). At the other end of the spectrum is a fully customized design that requires engineering (structural or mechanical) as well as permits and a lot of coordination with you your architect, engineers, scontractors and subcontractors. typically a project sits somewhere in between. There may also be Landmark issues! Feel free to call my office (Tom van den Bout at 212-964-6070).
