I started noticing some rust streaks in my toilet bowl recently, and I decided to take a look inside the tank. As expected, there was significant rust build-up inside the tank, and I tried to scrape as much off with a sponge as possible. I made some progress, but the rust streaks still appear in the bowl– almost every day I have to scrub them off. Is there any sort of treatment that I could add to the water in the tank that would help break down the rust? About a year ago I bought one of those toilet kits from a hardware store and replaced all of the little parts (because they were covered in rust) so I am not sure how to keep this from happening…

Any suggestions on cleaning the tank and/or preventing this kind of thing in the future is much appreciated!

  1. Check the rubber flapper that is connected to the chain/flush handle. It gets hard and does not seal properly over time. Easy to do yourself. Check the water level in the tank as well. If it is set to high it will overflow back into the bowl. Rusty water may mean you have galvanized plumbing pipe somewhere in the house.

  2. To remove the rust…use ZUD. It’s a powdered cleaner, similar to scouring powder but not abrasive. Most hardware stores carry it…just follow the easy directions.
