I am looking for front doors for my Carroll Gardens brownstone and am put off by the prices of new wood doors. Our house is 16 feet wide so the doors / door we need will be smaller than average. But with the cold weather finally here, we are hemorrhaging heat through our front doors. Any suggestions?

We also need back doors that are not a standard size and (28″). We have tried all the usual places, but short of having them custom made, we are stumped. Having just replaced all the windows, we are hoping to get the house sealed up tight at the doors too before this winter of unprecedented oil prices gets in full swing.

  1. I’d keep checking the salvage places,
and the street because people throw out all sorts of doors all the time.

Mostly interior, but you never know . . . a neighbor just pulled a door *exactly* like my front door out of a dumpster.

I have the short inside vestibule door (big beveled glass) for my 16′ building in the basement. Post an email if you’d like to buy it.
But i don’t think that’s the one you’re looking for.

  2. There is door store on 3rd Ave (in the 20’s) its on the right side of the street going into the higher numbers. I have not been inside but the selection in the window looks very nice. Good luck.

  3. I live in a 16-foot brownstone also, and the only way you’ll get doors to fit your space is to have them custom made. It can get pricey, depending on what you want. I, too, would like to replace my front door (which isn’t the original), but I’ll have to defer it. I had my back door (security storm door) done by Vitarose, but I wouldn’t recommend them. They don’t stand behind their product, and they gave me a hard time when I needed a minor repair. They were going to charge me the full installation price to replace one piece of flashing. They claimed they would have to remove the door in its entirety and rebuild the entire frame. It wasn’t true. Park Slope Glass did the repair for me and charged only $200 because I was a window customer of theirs. Sorry I can’t help on your front door inquiry. I’m sure you’ll get some responses with useful info. Good luck!
