During the renovation of our Bed-Stuy brownstone, a $900 rented sander has gone missing. Our GC said the sander was on the parlor floor of the house when he and the crew left. I locked the door behind them and was on the garden level for the rest of the night. There was no sign of break-in, and nothing else was missing. Should a contractor’s insurance cover this? Do we need to call the police? Ethically, if no insurance covers this, should we split the cost?

  1. I’ve managed to save up roughly $30878 in my bank account, but I’m not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

  2. Who rented the sander; you or the contractor? The tool is the responsibility of the renter. If the contractor rented it, he should have taken poper precautions against theft. Any contractor knows that tools have a tendancy to walk off the job site. It’s not your problem. If you rented it, hopefully it’s covered under your homeowner’s policy because you probably won’t have much luck with the contractor

  3. FILE A POLICE REPORT! Cover yourself!! No, you’re not responsible, and you definately shouldn’t feel obligated to cover any part of the cost. It’s his responsiblilty to take care of his tools.

  4. Sounds fishy to me. Your home owners insurance should cover it less the deductible…$500? Most likely one of his own guys stole it or else a sub contractor who was recently working in the home who might have had access to the keys. All I know one guy didn’t take it those things weigh a ton. Don’t feel that bad, contractors stuff is always getting stolen. I NEVER leave rented tools behind on the job no matter what.

  5. Did you see the sander there when they left? This seems like an insurance issue to me. He should make a claim, as it was his responsiblity to return the sander.
