Hi- I was wondering if anyone with a frame house, knows how much it would cost to replace vinyl siding with wood clapboard and replace trim around windows to bring it back to how it looked originally?

  1. We used T&A for a job a few years back and thought they cut corners. We weren’t too happy with them. Can’t recommend anyone else, but just wanted to voice my opinion.

  2. We used T&A as well and they did a great job on our three-story, 12′ wide frame house: removed vinyl siding and other layers, replaced studs on the third floor where a leak had rotted out the previous ones, removed all the brick fill, created new frames and installed new wood windows, and finished it with cedar clapboard, sealed the siding and painting, for about $23,000. But extras like installing the cornice were add-ons and very very expensive comparatively.

  3. Call Arthur at T&A Carpentry (Theresa & Arthur) in Red Hook. He is the king of frame house makeovers and an extremely nice guy. Don’t have the # handy, but they’re listed.

Just got a quote from him for the front of our 20′ -wide, 3 story frame house. About 25K to take it down to the studs, put in insulation, waterproofing and new wood or composite siding, plus custom trim. Cost could be higher depending on trim style. He can also do fancy stuff like add a porch (for another 50K)!

They also have a terrific website with lots of photos of their work.

  4. I recently had estimates done on my house in Ditmas Park for similar type work. We estimated for total removal and placement of Composite siding with Clapboard on first floor and shingles on Floors 2/3. The estimate assumed that the original trim was still relatively intact under the siding. Anyway, numbers came in around 45- 50k with paint.

Obviously, this number is a function of house size as well, so it’s just rough. Hope it’s helpful.
