Insulating Exterior Walls
Is it necessary to insulate between new walls and the exterior brick of your rear and front facade? our contractor claims it is redundant, since these walls have two layers of brick already. our instinct is “more insulation the better”, but we are reluctant to pick a fight over something without further info….thanks.

Insulation is a good idea, but make sure you don’t block the air cavity between the brick and the backup wall – there needs to be some air flow to reduce moisture buildup
Definately insulate. It is hardly redundant, we are doing it not only between brick walls and sheetrock but between floors as well.
The bricks R value, as discussed before, does not provide enough resistance. The material is also a good conductor, so the cold air will surely penetrate. Place a vapor barrier on the inside face of the brick and then fur out your metal studs. before applying gypsum board, insulate the cavity

Brick has an R-value of 1 per inch. Not much at all. Our brick extension was a freezer until we remodelled and insulated.
it is not redundent three quarter of an inch polystyrene is = to a 30 inch concrete wall i wouldnt use fiberglass because of moisture issues also you dont want to have a double vapor barrier why would it be a fight you are paying for it it may be an extra
