Ironwork and Decks
We need to rehabilitate the ironwork on our stoop and we also need to have metal hatches fabricated for the old coal hatches in the front and back of our house. Any recommendations for contractors? We are also looking for someone to build a deck off of our parlor level. Thanks

Custom Metal Works in Brooklyn are not competent. They actually had the nerve to deliver a broken gate to me just around the corner from their shop. These guys suck.
I just contracted with Custom Metal Works in Brooklyn to fabricate and install 3 hatches (front, back & roof) based on references from a house tour. The work looks good and they have very reasonable prices.
I use Payless Gates. Ask for George. Tell them Justin from JEL Construction sent you.
I won’t recommend anyone in particular, there are many fine metalworks outfits in Bklyn. But I will give you this one piece of advice.
Make sure they complete the entire job – the stoop, the hatches, the deck, etc. BEFORE paying them. What I have found with these guys is that they will bid the whole thing in pieces, giving you decent prices on the smaller projects which they haveno intention of completing.
Then they finish the big job, such as the deck, get payment for that, and never come back to do the small stuff they really don’t care about.
The moral of this story is to make them do the small jobs 1st – hold the big job back as a carrot to make sure the entire scope of work gets done.
I’ve been trying to get any number of ironworks guys to just show up to refinish my fence – they seem so busy with bigger jobs, I simply gave up until next spring.
