What's Really Happening at 483 Washington Ave?

So we’re a little embarrassed to admit that we don’t really know what’s going on on this block of Washington between Fulton and Gates. We know the demo at 483 Washington Avenue (top photo), next to the church, has been going on for a few weeks now, but it never occurred to us that they would actually be tearing this old building down! WTF? Is that really what’s happening or this just an extreme version of a gut reno? Take a look at Property Shark to see a photo of the original building with its mansard roof. A non-profit group Neighborhood Restore Housing Development owns the property and can probably do whatever it likes, since the building has the unfortunate luck of lying a few feet outside of the Clinton Hill Historic District. What about across the street at 504-508 Washington (bottom photo)? What’s going up there?
I wouldn’t be surprised if PACC managed that building. For all their talk about improving the neighborhood(s) and affordable housing, they own a lot of run-down, abandoned, vacant buildings that are in horrible state of disrepair and are an eyesore and blight on the community. I wish they would put their money behind all that talk, fix up their buildings and, rent them out to people who really could use the space.
I have also heard rumors about PACC managing the 483 Washington building. The building was in terrible shape. If it was not pulled down, it would have fallen over on its own.
“an extreme version of a gut reno?”
LOLROTFBSOOMN! A gut reno like the one they did to Penn Station 40 years ago.
The house across the street had an ugly front porch/extention, but the original house behind it was really beautiful, I live a block away and it was gone in few hours, the first part that was demolished was the extention, so you could actually see the original house for about 20 minutes until they destroy it, a friend of mine participated at the last clinton hill socitey meeting and from what I understood they are going to be condos and fair market price apt. in both lots.
483 was dilapidated and soggy – extreme shoddy repairs. Thank god it’s under new management.
483 Washington was apparently occupied by squatters for years before the recent action there. After the building was emptied, there was a man living in an SUV parked in front of the building.
The building across the street was torn down I do believe on Labor Day (05). There was no scaffolding nor proective covering. They just knocked it down. It smelled of an illegal demo but as the poster above said, it was quite hideous.
The house across the street was the ugliest thing I have ever seen — no big loss!
pure second hand … but I heard that Pratt Area Community Council was involved in the 483 Washington rehab (although with the third floor gone, it looks like it is on its way to being razed!) and that the one across the street was torn down in one day, on a holiday (Thanksgiving day?). If it is true about PACC, I consider that good news given their work at Classon and Gates.
