In the wake of the controversy over whether to include the Revere Sugar Factory within the new light industry zone in Red Hook, comes news that the city is considering turning the four piers between Degraw and Atlantic into a residential area when American Stevedoring’s lease runs out next year. The question is: Do we keep this area maritime or put lighter [industrial] uses there or do we mirror the kind of development that is happening across the street? EDC vice president Kate Collignon asked Community Board 6’s Waterfront Committee last week, referring to the increasingly gentrified menu of retail and dining options on the other side of Columbia.

I look forward to the change to residential zoning. There is so much potential for this nabe. Columbia St Waterfront and Red Hook below it could blossom into an artist’s haven and Yuppie-ville all at the same time. I can already see the commercial and residential RE property values rising!
