one-hanson-protest-1008.jpgWhile some commenters on yesterday’s post about non-union workers at One Hanson Place expressed pro-union sentiment, none of them got as riled up about the issue as Gowanus Lounge did this morning. Reporting on last night’s protest in front of the building, GL dropped the F-bomb, writing that “to deny these the families of these hard working people a basic right like health care coverage is beyond despicable.” Let’s just hope no Brownstoner writers read this one!

  1. I think the union has their own agenda in that they want to get their cut of these employees salaries. If this building isn’t unionized then its like a crack in the damn and other buildings may do the same thing, so the union is trying to protect its interests (which may or may not be aligned with these employees).

What exactly is the union offering? Is the union saying they’re going to pay for the employees health insurance?

  2. Fail to see analogy. Others replaced by new technology. What do you see replacing unions as a counterpoint on rapacious capitalists (to live up to my nickname?)

  3. Obviously a poor business decision on the part of the building. But, in fact, Gowanus Lounge got the facts wrong in their statement. The families were not “denied” health benefits they were simply made to pay for them.

That said, union entitlements shall go the way of the buggywhip, typewriter, Bush legacy (insert your own analogy).
