Revisiting the Site of Brooklyn's Flatiron Building

When we discussed the Clarett Group’s proposed design for a 28-story triangular tower a couple weeks back, we said we thought it would work given the site’s context a few blocks from where leafy-green Fort Greene really starts. But just to be sure, we trekked over to Ashland and Fulton earlier this week to take another look. Sure ‘nuf, while there are a handful of brownstones on Ashland that are going to suffer from being in the tower’s shadow, overall we think the location can handle the scale of the building.

Parking requirement was not “waived”. Parking is never required in C6-4 zoning, which is what this site is. This is because C6-4 is zoned at transit-rich sites.
my biggest complaint is that the developer has gotten the parking requirement waived. it’s what, 100 units? so that is another how-many people looking for on-street parking?
Far be it from me to argue against density in urban development, but this is a little too bland and a little too much. If something has the temerity to stick 360 feet into the air, it should give a little something back to the world around it, don’t you think. The design has that kind of mean, rapacious developer feel to it, doesn’t it? A bit “upper east,” can you dig?
Fair enough Michael. I would feel the same. My point of view is based on the fact that from BAM Harvey Theatre to Flatbush, there are other large tall buildings. I suppose there will always be an issue of what to do at the border of a series of small scale buildings that abut against a group of larger buildings…
I disagree. I think 10 stories lower would be closer to appropriate. Then again, as someone who lives in one of those brownstones that will be in the shadow, I have a bias.
I agree. Whatever your view is on the design of the building and the “Miami” like skin of the exterior, I think the scale works at this location.
