An old building at 2 Franklin Avenue (at Wallabout Street) that in recent years housed a Save Rite store has been converted into a hotel called Pointe Plaza. Here’s the description from the DOB filing: “HOTEL WITH ACCESSORY EATING AND DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT AND WITH PROPOSED HOUSE OF WORSHIP AS PER PLANS SUBMITTED HEREWITH AND FOR A NEW FIFTH FLOOR VERTICAL ENLARGEMENT.” Given the location, it’s pretty safe to assume that this is a project by and for the Hasidic community.

  1. Agree with some that the architecture here is quite good, and the renovation looks alright. It’s an odd bird, though, as the expressionist/deco look and bourgeois banners seem to indicate that it’s aiming for normal central Brooklyn clients and not just the hasidic locals, who tend to prefer a different look to their hotels and rental event spaces.

  2. It’s all stylish and good looking.

What it really needs to fit in with “Community Standards” is more brick facing and steel I-beam balconies walled in with scabbed together doors and plexiglass.
