According to an article in today’s Sun, our new governor could end up opposing projects like Atlantic Yards that involve the use of eminent domain. As a state senator, David Paterson participated in a 2005 rally calling for a statewide moratorium on eminent domain. Councilmember Letitia James, who also took part in the rally, says she hopes Paterson’s views on the subject haven’t changed. “He stood with me and proposed some legislation and I am very hopeful that the lieutenant governor and soon-to-be governor will honor his commitment and will either issue a moratorium or review the abuse of eminent domain across New York City,” says James. Steven Spinola, the president of the Real Estate Board of New York, says it’s “premature” to make predictions about where Paterson will stand on eminent domain, but that “It would clearly be a mistake for the state to give up one of its powers to get public improvement projects off the ground.” Time will certainly tell.

Ratner saved nothing. He’s a scumbag developer nothing more. Everything he’s “contributed” to Brooklyn is a joke, and don’t expect much more from the moron. Well…I for one have regularly complained about the last-ditch effort to slip a Trojan Wedge into the community (a physical one) by closing the Carlton Avenue Bridge.
A LOT of pedestrians rely on that bridge and going around it to use Vanderbilt or the 6th Avenue Bridge can double your travel time. Plus, not everyone is 100% abled. Some of us have mobility issues. It was a mean idea to close the bridge at this stage of NO CONSTRUCTION…all they’ve done is destroy a convertible structure (Ward’s Bakery), demolished some smaller buildings (manufacturing “blight” in the process) and dug around here and there in the old bus parking lot and further west in the yards area.
Nothin’ much is happening. They’re not taking down the Carlton Bridge, are they? It’s simply closed off to pedestrians and cars. I have read that they have to pay to rebuild it no matter what (say they demolish it and do not go forward with AY building) so it seems they are stalling.
Meanwhile, the community cannot access this public thoroughfare.

The eminent domain proceedings have already taken place for most properties. Weinstein is in court right as he obviously refused an offer by the state. Whatever Pauslon thinks, he doesn’t have the authority to turn back the clock.

I mean sheesh – the guy built MetroTech when everyone though Brooklyn was finished, the country was in recession and there was no proven market demand for office space in the Borough since the 1920s.
