New Rowhouses for Bushwick Nothing Special

A reader drew this latest batch of new-build townhouses to our attention. The locale? Scenic Bushwick, subject of last week’s Village Voice close up column. “They’re not pretty but they are an improvement over the garbage strewn half-of-a block that preceded them,” he writes. He was also struck by the racially-tinged quotation from the Voice that now adorns the Photos page on the development’s website: “Bushwick is increasingly inhabited by a white singles crowd that sees itself as progressively pioneering.” Something tells us this is going to turn off a lot of folks. Of course, it’s hard to tell what the target demographic of the rowhouses is, given some of the aesthetic choices. Offense #1: Utility meters on the facade! What’s going on? Is there a building code that requires this? Argghhh! Stop the madness!

The weird thing is this: The DEP water guy use the little black box on the front of our house to read the water meter. The ConEd guy is capable of reading our electric meter via the same box. He showed me. But for some reason he’s not allowed. Every month he knocks on our door, comes in and reads it in the basement. He also said that ConEd is now capable of doing wireless drive-by meter reading in some spots. They just come by in a truck, pick up the signal and go. Never even get out of the truck.
Totally weird — I had absolutely no problems, ordered it on-line and everything — maybe that’s the secret — don’t talk to an actual human being if at all possible? Sad.
Just don’t get me started on Cablevision — I am waiting out here for Time Warner!
I have had the same problem with Verizon DSL in Flatubush. We’re wired – a technician came out and said so – but headquarters doesn’t have us in the system!!!
I agree — just another example of poorly-trained employees making up information. Another example — my next-door neighbor called up Verizon to get ADSL for her computer when she moved in. The employee asked where she lived, then asked where that was like she’d never heard of it before (PLG), then left her on hold forever, only to come back to tell her it wasn’t available in her area — when I’ve had it since I moved in a year ago! I’m sure the Con Ed people had no idea what they were talking about, but just said that because it was easier.
I’m not meaning that you are lying about what ConEd told you, I’m meaning that what they told you is BS. I had ConEd fix my meters and hook up the remote sensors that were incorrectly connected this year. I didn’t have to fake a limp either. I’m just saying that it can be done and they are giving you the run around. Maybe you could see if a licensed electrician can do the install for you and then have ConEd come and configure it.
Uggggggly!
call them up, that IS the deal, only handicapped. you cannot pay con ed extra to install them or i would have done it.
That’s hogwash about being handicapped. What does that have to do with ConEd remotely reading the meters. You have to pay for the remote meter installation. Maybe they will do it for free if you are handicapped?
Keyspan with install remote reader for approx $75 (for each meter). Of course doesn’t help for the electric meters.
