According to Metro, City and State officials are meeting next week to discuss the creation of a new “harbor district” to tie together all the public space initiatives at the southern end of the East River. Included in the plan are the 85-acre park planned along the Brooklyn waterfront from just north of the Manhattan Bridge to Atlantic Avenue; the 15-acre park along the East River in Manhattan; and the 172-acre Governors Island redevelopment. Also in the mix: The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Battery Park and the lower portion of the Hudson River Park. Transportation among the sites will be a major topic of transportation, with outside-the-box ideas like Santiago Calatrava’s gondola not being ruled out.
New Harbor District [Metro]
I wouldn’t worry, anon 10:31. Knowing this city they have many plans. many.
I love the gondola idea- but only if Calatrava and NOT Gehry- does it. Gehry has become so ubiquitious that I fear his mark everywhere.
What about the rest of the Brooklyn waterfront that stretches to the Newtown Creek (aka the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Williamsburg to Greenpoint)???
GrandPa – what a grump!
One unified government agency because you know, the Port Authority, the Battery Park Authority, LMDC and the MTA do such a good job of protecting the public interest. I foresee several high paying patronage jobs appointed by Albany, a new agency to issue debt to be borne by tax payers and it will be an “apolitical body” like the aforementioned, meaning it will not be responsive to voters. When will New York learn?
