January 16, 2006, NY Post — It’s going to be a brave new year of development in Brooklyn, surpassing even the surge of projects in 2005, business leaders and lawmakers have pledged. Between cruise ships and skyscrapers, basketball arenas and gourmet groceries, Brooklyn’s swiftly rising profile is set to go sky high in 2006. Developers expect to break ground on the largest projects in the borough’s history this year, as ribbons will be cut on other monumental developments and still others will get the green light for future construction. It’s the supernova borough, said Councilman David Yassky, whose Downtown-Brooklyn Heights district will host much of the development.

Some of the projects mentioned include…

  • Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • Fairway and Ikea in Red Hook
  • Queen Mary 2
  • Brooklyn Marriott Downtown Expansion
  • Fairway and Ikea in Red Hook
  • Atlantic Yards
  • Fairway and Ikea in Red Hook
  • Thor Tower – Downtown
  • Whole Foods in Gowanus

    1. As for Fulton Street area, there is already the Faculty House Condos being marketed by A&H on the corner of St. James Pl. and Atlantic; the proposed condos to go up on the parking lot next to the Cathedral Condos on Washington between Fulton and Atlantic; and another project, I heard they were condos, on Clinton between Fulton and Atlantic.

    2. There are a slew of massive lots on Fulton that are primed for development e.g. Grand to Franklin Avenues on both sides of the street. Does anyone have specific information with respect to these initiatives?

Hopefully, future projects will produce results far superior to the Classon Twin Towers – all form but no substance. According to property records, the developers paid ~ $1mm for the land and took out a $4mm construction loan (seemed light for a project of this size). I went to the Open House in the fall and I wasn’t impressed. Where did the money go? The workmanship left much to be desired. Are these units even selling?

On another note, is there an organization presently spearheading the development effort on Fulton, as is the case with Myrtle? In order to add stability to FG/CH, it’s imperative that the two bookends, Myrtle and Fulton, get developed in order to strengthen the core.

    3. Around Fulton there is a great ammount of lots and buildings to be developed and is defenately zoned commercial and not landmarked and yes it will be great to see some good quality groceries/supermarkets, don’t necessarely need to be this big corporates, about small great stores more like the vibe of brooklyn.

    4. I didn’t know Patrick Gallahue ended up at the Post. He used to be THE writer for the Brooklyn Papers, and I mean THE writer, given that he probably wrote about 75% of the articles. He’s a pretty good writer and knows Brooklyn.

    5. To iac.
There is no such location as Flushing Bet. Myrtle and Park, think about it.
If you are talking about an entire block, that would be interesting to know, so please refresh your memory on the right location.
