The art deco former Trylon Theater in Rego Park will be demolished to make way for a residential building with two stories of commercial space. The building now houses the Ohr Nation Synagogue which just invested $2 million into a four-year long renovation. The developer, Trylon LLC, bought the property in December 2012 for $9 million according to DNAinfo. The 1,000 member congregation, which tried but failed to purchase the building when it was on the market, will be displaced by the construction which the developer says will take about two years complete. Right now there is no timetable for the project and no permits have been pulled for either new construction or demolition. The theater, at 98-81 Queens Boulevard, opened in 1939 and operated until 1999 when it was shuttered. The congregation took the space over two years later. You can read more about the history of the theater here.

It was great when it was the Trylon Theater, but has been a mess since that closed down. Lots of new development in the neighborhood now. Attractive to more and more young people who can’t afford Manhattan or Brooklyn.
