gowanus-hearing-031209.jpgA couple of Gowanus Rezoning-related hearings went down earlier this week. First up, there was a Gowanus Rezoning Public Scoping session held at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Tuesday. According to Pardon Me for Asking, a mix of artists, architects and pro-manufacturing reps urged the city to preserve the area’s gritty workspaces and to limit the height of new buildings to 8 stories rather than 12. Meanwhile, after failing to muster a quorum last week, the City Council’s sub-committee on Zoning and Franchises met yesterday to vote on the more specific proposal for the three-acre site Toll Brothers is seeking to develop along the canal. Other than Queens Councilman Tony Avella, all the members of the sub-committee, including Bill DeBlasio, voted to approve the rezoning. I will continue to work with the council and the community on the complete rezoning of the Gowanus Canal to ensure all development supports our borough’s economy and the needs of our residents, he told Brooklyn Paper.
