Maybe cranes are temperamental creatures who get upset when they find out their projects are being scaled back. How else to explain the case of the Finger Building’s crane acting out last week. It was shortly after 7:30 am, as Sondra Chang, her huband Paul Lussing and their 4-year-old son were going about their morning routine in their apartment at 143 North 7th Street in Williamsburg (across the street from the Finger Building) when they were startled by “the soft thud and long, loud ripping sound” of a crane smashing into the exterior wall. The accident is now causing a lot of finger-pointing (no pun intended) and responsibility-dodging, which should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been following the story of the controversial project and its unpopular developer Mendel Brach. Details on the link.

About 25 years ago, there was a disaster in midtown manhattan–a crane fell on top of a building, and debris fell to the ground and a pedestrian was killed. It turned out that there are very specific rules about operating cranes in wind conditions, and the wind conditions have to be specific to the site. It’s very technical, and 9 times out of 10 you can forget to take the wind into consideration and get the job done. I recommend that the residents whose apartment was damaged get a lawyer and make that point to the developer and the DOB. It is highly unlikely that the construction crew was aware of wind restrictions and complied. Luckily, nobody was killed, but it sickens me to see the DOB covering for a developer like this and leaving a crew and a neighborhood at risk.
I passed the site a few times lately, and construction is in full force, seems he settled everything with the city agencies.
I am trying to get more info, but so far I can’t find any.
