This ‘blighted’ house at 481 Dean Street has emerged at the last minute as the final barrier to the bulldozers at Atlantic Yards. According to The Post, the Ahmed family is still living there and, despite having already accepted the standard $85,000 relocation fee Ratner was offering renters to move, refusing to budge. “They saw that man got all that money last week and thought, why should they leave?” said a relative of Aisha Ahmed, whose ex-husband bought the building in 1988. Ahmed’s two children are now claiming that they should each get an additional $85,000 buyout. It turns out that neither Forest City Ratner for ESDC even knew people were still living in the house. The Post also reported that a teenager entering the house late in the day yesterday said that the issue had been resolved.

I agree with you totally, Babs and MM. The whole project stinks and we, the taxpayers, will be paying Ratner off for decades. If I loved my home (and I do), I wouldn’t be anxious to give it up and would damn well fight against it as long as I could. If, ultimately, I were to fail in that fight, I would sure want to extract every penny possible from the bastard forcing me out. Luckily for me, no one seems to be running to build megaprojects in the heart of Hasidic Crown Hts.
Was it Ratner or the MTA who did the LIRR entrance to the mall complex on Hanson Place and Flatbush? The one that was just finished?
Because if that is his work standard, that is what worries me. I can live with a stadium, but I would like someone else to build it.
Maybe I don’t understand how it works, but if they can take more $ out of Ratner’s hide, that’s fine with me. although knowing Ratner, the payout probably comes in some clever way from tax dollars… Alas…
