In addition to the Fairway opening scheduled for February (which should provide about 200 jobs), Red Hook’s waterfront has a bunch of other changes in the works, including possibly a “maritime-themed tourist attraction”. While the description sounds a little too Mickey-Mouse for our taste, the planners involved promise that the existing architecture and feel of the neighborhood will not be sacrificed. According to Kate Ascher, the executive vice president of infrastructure at the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the Atlantic Basin, the body of water between Pier 11 and Pier 12 would be the sweet spot for the project’s development and the narrow commercial streets leading to those piers would be the village green.

  1. I believe Columbia street will be widened and will provide a bike-way. I think the area has great potential. Pathmark, Ikea are just the beginnigs of a migration trend to this fantastic yet undiscovered waterfront.

  2. I can’t wait to shop somewhere other than the Gowanus Pathmark. I go there to stock up for the family about once month solely because you can take your cart to your car. A big ass parking lot with carts and gourmet items would be heaven in the city. I would ask for enough check out lanes and that they stock the shelves at night like they do in other places, but that would be asking way too much.

  3. how is all this going to work with the narrow Columbia and van brunt as the main arteries? does anyone know the future traffic patterns on the table if they are any? I once heard ikea is supposed to do something with the traffic issue (like maybe have their own exit off the bqe or something) does anyone have any knowledge on this?
