When we first laid eyes on the new building going up at 186 Grand Street in Williamsburg we thought it looked like the handiwork of Radusky et al at Bricolage. Then we remembered that we’d covered it back in early 2008 when there was a hole in the ground and a fuzzy rendering to go by. Based on that rendering, one commenter had this to say: “The devil’s in the details on this one. Could be good or could be very, very bad.” Based on what’s been built so far, it’s looking more like the latter, we’d say. Those windows lintels are a bummer.

Thank you Dave. Considering the other crap we see being built (or lately stalled sitting there rotting) around the neighborhood, this looks like a freakin’ PALACE!
It’s in Williamsburg for god’s sake. Who cares????
Joe,
I’d venture to guess that most people looking at buying or renting these don’t even know what a lintel is.
That’s kinda why the whole debate on this one seems rather silly, if you ask me.

Hey, I didn’t know what a lintel was until this discussion but I still know what I like. These cheezy “pre-war” shortcuts are a step in the right direction but even someone with no architectural training can tell when something “just ain’t right.”

“Who knows? That style of lintel (sans Styrofoam) might catch on as time goes on… ”
Seriously – in 100 years there may be a blog praising the asthetics of styrofoam lintels, fedders A/C sleeves and other “shoddy” things. Radusky, Scarano and Karl Fischer might be the next Montrose Morris or Minard La-whateverhisnameis.
Sorry, the wraparound round lintels look a little silly to us…

Not so crazy about those either, especially when their just stucco with Styrofoam underneath. Not sure if that’s the case here. Bottom line is there’s no accounting for taste. Who knows? That style of lintel (sans Styrofoam) might catch on as time goes on…

“This will actually probably be one of the better looking buildings on the block when it’s finished. This is not an especially beautiful street with 1st rate architecture. ”
except that dope-ass APC building!!
I think the top of the building is called a Dutch style. Similar to the tops of 1920’s and 30’s commercial building in mine and Benson’s dear old Gravesend.
