Anyone know the scoop on what’s happening at the corner of 4th Avenue and 19th Street? Condos, we can only assume. Who’s the developer? GMAP P*Shark

  1. applicant of record is architect Sandor Weiss.
Did a web search. Came up with this
    “Sandor Weiss, Brooklyn, NY
Profession: Architect; Lic. No. 014318; Cal. No. 19641
Regents Action Date: February 12, 2002
Action: Application for consent order granted; Penalty agreed upon: 1 year suspension, execution of suspension stayed, probation 1 year, $5,000 fine.
Summary: Licensee admitted to charge of failing, on three separate occasions, to prepare a thorough written evaluation of architectural plans to which he affixed his signature and professional seal but which were neither prepared by him nor by an employee under his supervision.”

  2. I lived at 662 and we were forced out in April. The building had not been officially condemned, but city engineers had placed a notice of pending action. There were two units a floor, small one bedrooms about 450 sq. ft. From what I heard, each owner (about 20 between the two buildings) had to put up about$15K, the rest would come from insurance and loans. The floors were crazy slanted and there were huge cracks in the walls but the rent was cheap. $900 for my 1bdrm. The people in the building were nice, some had been there for years, several of us had been there less than a year.

  3. At least the units facing 4th ave will have great views across the harbor. I first noticed this building last year when I looked at a condo across the street– 660 and 662 4th ave are part of the same condo. Interestingly, 662 is all boarded up in front lately, as the staircase inside was supposedly unstable and had to be rebuilt. So I guess everyone that lived there had to move out for a while?? I thought the building was kind of sketchy, and knowing that the stairs were collapsing makes me really glad I didn’t buy there!

  4. YES, another great local for new condos on 4th Ave…I get my car fixed there, so i can say hello to all the new residents…wait, that’s assuming the condos will sell 😉

The owner originally was going to only go the allowable 7 stories under the old zoning. He got wise after the rezoning (and upzoning of 4th Ave) and refiled for 11 stories.

    Thank you Bklyn CP!

But, it was the trade off to “marginally protect: the contextual character of the side streets.

You see another one like this on 4th Ave between 17th/18th real soon…and right on top of the Prospect Expressway too-boot. Another great location!
