Development Watch: 588 Union Street

We’re having a hard time figuring out what’s going on at 588 Union Street in Gowanus. The original brick building was boarded up back in August 2006, the same month the property was purchased for $440,074. Around that time, a permit was approved for “remedial repairs.” After ripping off the entire facade and rebuilding all the floors, the site was hit with a Stop Work Order back in September for a lack of shoring and guard rails. We’ve got no idea why these violations have yet to be cured. Anyone know what’s going on with this place? GMAP P*Shark DOB

You’re an idiot. Before all those rono’s started, it was residential units. How can it not be zoned residential? If the put condos there, it would only help the neighborhood. The rest of the rentals on that block are filled with low income losers. If I took a shit on the corner, the property value would go up. You’re just worried about your rent going up.
3:18… I was stopped at the light on Union and Third the other day, facing East, and thought my eyes were losing it. The buildings actually look like they’re bending backwards. Incredible. Pisa has nothing on the Gowanus.
its the gowanes canal, the soil is no good.
What’s going on with ALL those buildings down there? All the facades are tilting back, back, waaaaay back. You can really see it when you’re looking west from 4th Ave. Did the entire neighborhood settle?
Seems like they are illegally trying to do condos where the area is not zoned for residential but trying to skirt around the issue by “renovating” the existing structure. Already called DOB about this.
