This weekend saw 175 walkers earning bucks from 500 donors for every step they took at the 4th Annual Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn Walkathon. DDDB sent us this roundup, along with a slideshow from the stroll:

We had our 4th successful walkathon and we deeply appreciate the active participation of our supporters and their sponsors. Even though we’re in the midst of a very difficult economy, and a presidential campaign competing for funds, our donor base continues to grow. So, we are proud of the money raised at Saturday’s event. Fundraising for the two lawsuits is an ongoing, daily effort, and the response consistently reminds us of the support we have, which is now well over 4,000 individual donors,” said Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn spokesman Daniel Goldstein. “As long as the community continues to support our work and the lawsuits, as they have done for nearly five years now, we will continue to fight the Atlantic Yards project. We must keep the pressure on Forest City Ratner as its development plan continues to struggle against widespread doubt and opposition, and contends with the challenging economic crisis and credit crunch. We fully expect to be here next year for our 5th annual Walkathon, if we haven’t sent the developer packing by then.

  1. “Lalala and IDisagreeable’s comments/observations about a walkathon route and some fliers are puerile and flippant. . . . I would love to see how you would handle it if you were the victims of Phallic City Ratner.”

ha! are you doing, like, performance art or something?

“From my take of DDDB, they are not against development. The name ‘Develop DON’T Destroy’ points that out.”

of course! we all know that names always describe actual intentions with 100% accuracy. see, e.g., the PATRIOT Act, the Defense of Marriage Act, Focus on the Family . . . hey, those swift boat veterans said they were for Truth, so maybe they weren’t so bad after all!

  2. Sorry Kid,
Number one, DDDB is not my “beloved”. I’m not a member and didn’t happen to give anyone money for the walkathon. But I think it is wonderful that someone IS doing something.

I am saddened that posted fliers, as you say “papering a neighborhood with trash” rub you the wrong way. Do you cringe at all the stoop sale and lost/found cat announcements that are taped up too?

Frankly, fliers taped up on lampposts are nothing compared to the strong-armed, taxpayer-robbing, backdoor deal, mega project basically predicated on the taking of public property, public funds, utility payer’s rate increases, and twisted “eminent domain”.

A one-page photocopy taped up on lampposts or in my mailbox announcing a community event is preferable and hardly shocks me as it apparently does you. I much prefer it to the piles of Circuit City and Kohls circulars littering our stoops and Domino’s Pizza doorknob fliers nearly every day and the possibility of a future theft of our sunlight and huge buildings looming over our neighborhood with the attendant arena crowds, heavy littering, traffic, heavy environmental impact, etc., etc.

This proposed project would COMPLETELY ruin the character of many neighborhoods in the area.

Lalala and IDisagreeable’s comments/observations about a walkathon route and some fliers are puerile and flippant. Your remarks are not cut but rather distracting and boring. I’m certainly glad you’re not my kids. I’d be embarrassed. DDDB and many groups came together and had a nice community event and unless you’re working for Ratner, they are probably doing you a huge service you’re not even aware of.

On top of it, Lalala, you’re spreading false accusations. From my take of DDDB, they are not against development. The name “Develop DON’T Destroy” points that out. That group along with many others wants sensible development, not wanton destruction/unsustainable development, abuse of eminent domain, the demapping of City land, a huge burden for the treasury (your future state taxes), no properly conducted study of its impact on the city, not a project that is nothing but an theft achieved through corruption.

I would love to see how you would handle it if you were the victims of Phallic City Ratner.

  3. gasp, someone dared speak ill of beloved dddb?! here’s another one for you: why did the walkathon so carefully avoid the actual footprint of AY? is it because there isn’t anything or anyone there to impress?

“people still have the right to make fliers.” yes, they do. and i also have the right to point out the hypocrisy of papering a neighborhood with trash when one’s “resistance” is premised on respect for and preservation of the character of that neighborhood.

so brooklyngreene, you can put your sanctimony away now.

  4. i disagree and lalaland:
Maybe YOU should go out and do something as involved and community-oriented as DDDB instead of letting your fingers do the walking…and criticising. Sure, be negative about any resistance instead of looking at the real issues at hand and what DDDB and scores of community groups are working on. I think people still have the right to make fliers, no?

By the way, “lalaland” is a perfect name.

    Honestly!

  5. does their $45K figure take into account the labor and materials it cost in order to litter the neighborhood (which they claim to be so concerned about) with garish and wasteful fliers a couple of weeks ago?
