According to Brooklyn Papers, the “Minerva” project at 614 Seventh Avenue in Greenwood Heights has been halted by the Department of Buildings for failure to have completed the foundation before the recent zoning changes went into effect. While the same goes for the building at 182 15th Street, work will be allowed to continue at 162 16th Street because its foundation was completed on time. Downsizing proponents in the nabe weren’t breaking out the champagne yet, though, as it is expected that Minerva developer, Chaim Nussenzweig, and his architect, Robert Scarano, would take their case to the Board of Standards and Appeals for an exemption to the newly passed downzoning. On potential trade-off is that the building will end up being shorter but bulkier.

  1. I was present at everyone of the public meetings leading up to the rezoning of South Slope Greenwood Heights. Except for Mr. Scarano there was no great protest. Mr. Scarano’s firm at least tried to make an effort at getting his voice heard. Where was everyone else? No one came forward with any other suggestions as to how new development could be managed. I really hate when people bitch and then don’t do anything. Where were the studies showing how this would harm the neighborhood? I went door to door telling people about the proposed zoning change. Many homeowners were in favor of it and many just tossed the information sheet I handed out into the garbage. You snooze you lose, mhn. One person can really change the world.

  2. I’ll humor you for awhile. Most of the work was done, before and after hours, including labor day week end as well as other weekends, with no variance to do so.
Anonymous; you must work for Katan. Your question is something Katan and his ilk have perfected. It’s called the shell game. Ask to see this and they show you that. You are changing the subject. What I do or don’t do is irrelevant. It’s what has been done at these sites, that is at question.

  3. Both 162 sixteenth and 182 15th hit a mysterious underground water source. They just kept putting concrete on top to cover there tracks. Hold it! Isn’t that from some mobster movie. Anyway back to the here and now; The water was definitely there But no one has given any answers as to where it came from or were it went. Same as the asbestos and the Lead. Maybe they are all under the concrete. Good luck to the next owner

  4. I understand that there is a complete photographic record of the foundation work from the beginning excavation until the state it is in now. Let this be the proof if it exists. By the way, is 162 the same building that hit the mysterious underground water source? Maybe now that they are vested they will demolish the foundation and start from the beginning.

  5. It is not “likely” to be un safe. It will. No question about it. As for the inspectors; they were no where to be found. The site is barricaded as if they were hiding something. Which they were. Illegal asbestos, and lead abatement, undocumented workforce, illegal excavation. You name it; its all been done. Not that the authorities haven’t been told mind you. They just don’t want to do anything about it because to do so would be to admit that they should have never rubber stamped his illegal plans to begin with.
It’s a wonderful thing. And all subsidized by your tax dollars.

  6. I personally watched them pour that thing from day one. To call it a foundation is an unbelievable stretch of the imagination. If anyone knows anything about construction they would know better than to refer to that thing, as such. They did not vibrate the concrete, they stuck rebar into the concrete after it was poured. They were too cheap to pay a pump truck; so they transported the concrete from the street to the far edges of the site in the bucket of the Back Hoe. They added about 4 feet to the back half of the foundation, after the first part was poured. Lastly they didn’t finish pouring there so called foundation till late last week; 10 days after Vesting day.
There is still hope that the tower will never materialize but only if some Politicos start getting involved and do the right thing for once (Write your reps). If not I truly feel sorry for anyone who might buy one of those units.
If you are thinking of doing so. Do your research and be careful when making a deal with the Devil. You know who comes out on top.
    You’ve been warned.
