As far as non-profit residential buildings go, this one at 169 Columbia Street in the Columbia Waterfront District is shaping up quite nicely. The brick color is refreshing, windows are large and the facade appears to (so far) be free of any silly faux retro stylings. A good argument for keeping lower-budget projects simple. You feeling it?

  1. OH MY GOD?! I know it’s an assisted living facility but does it have to look like 1930’s Russia? Who actually says let’s design some shit today and actually build it. Any decent architect or developer knows you don’t have to spend a fortune to make a decent looking building. Put some heart and soul into something that will be around for a hundred years, unfortunately in this case! They couldn’t even match the street wall?? What’s up with the one lonely sore thumb crapbalcony? My god what a disaster. This borough is so frustrating!!!

  2. What is faux-retro? The ornamentations we see on Brownstone facades dates back to Roman Times and was used heavily in renaissance europe. Good design and attractive ornament are never faux. But butt ugly buildings are an eyesore from drawing to demolition.

  3. I am quite happy with the way these have turned out. They really are a whole lot nicer than I expected and than a lot of the other crap that is going up in Brooklyn. Part of the building being recessed helps a lot too.
