An op-ed in The Daily News makes the case that it’s imperative the Brooklyn Nets not be called the Brooklyn Nets because it’s probably the worst team name in pro sports (“I am, first of all, unaware of another name in professional sports that references an object on that sport’s playing field”) and the move to Brooklyn gives the team a chance to pick a name that celebrates the borough. Some of the names suggested instead of the Nets: The Brooklyn Commodores, The Brooklyn Abolitionists, The Brooklyn Rhymes and

Most sports teams names are stupid, but the “Nets” have a long and sometimes proud heritage and it shouldn’t be thrown away…..Especially for the infinitely stupider names suggested in this article.
It’s so named because it rhymes with the Mets and Jets. Still a stupid name.
