While the DOB has rejected a first iteration of plans for a new building on the southwest corner of 4th Avenue and 3rd Street, the mere fact that the property’s owners are looking to construct something is noteworthy. The present owners of the long-blighted lot tried selling it off a couple years ago, and at one point a rumor was circulating that a Starbucks would come to the corner. Assuming the DOB does eventually sign off on plans, it will be interesting to see what sort of tenant is going to join the Pep Boys-Staples mix here.

I’m with jasong- that pit is authentic *and* historical. It’s a travesty that it hasn’t been landmarked, and I’m calling whoever is in charge of that _right now._
Its a shame. I think the pit adds character to the neighborhood — the bombed out and boarded up milieu.

Isn’t that redundant?
😉
As a side note, and obviously if there’s a market for ’em, more power to ’em… but the idea that New York City has a substantial “morning commute” that would support a drive-thru coffee/restaurant makes me a little sad.
There are trades people with trucks and other folks whose job uses a vehicle… but the idea of *commuters* in such large numbers. Uggh.
^^^The gas stations are on the ‘wrong’ side of the street too, but they’re both full of people like me in the morning when you need to get it. U-turns aren’t hard.
Not so ideal for a Starbucks since it’s on the wrong side of the street for morning commuters.
Plan calls for 6 parking spots – doesnt seem like Starbucks would be ok with that
Would a drive-thru place like a Starbuck’s, McDonald’s, a bank or whatever require additional/special review and approval by the DOT? Seems like it, right?
This will be on the corner on the way to the new Whole Foods, so foot traffic shouldn’t be a problem. And remember that it’s across the street from the park. This should not just be some rest stop of 4th Ave.
