A reader snapped these photos of the development site at 115 Kane Street at Hicks Street in what he calls “Cobble Hill West”. Formerly a BP gas station for years, a construction fence went up about 18 to 24 months ago before activity abruptly ceased. Two weeks ago, according to our source, some equipment appeared out front and recently they started digging to create the foundation. And what’s in the cards for this scenic location? 15,000 square feet of residential space spread over seven stories. Any other details about the project would be appreciated!

  1. I too live on tiffany Place.

I called the Community Board about this building last week – they had a pile driver going at 7 AM – my whole building shook. They drove piles for about 3 days and then stopped and I haven’t seen any work since.

The CB didn’t have any info about what’s going up. Interestingly, the site has a work permit for demolition and a construction fence. Is that enough to drive piles? there’s no construction permit.

  2. I live on Tiffany. My apartment is on the front side of the building, so it doesn’t face the BQE. The windows in our place are double-paned, but some people in the back have had second windows installed. (I think the company that does this is called New York Window or City Window; they’re based in Queens). The inner window sits about 6 inches in from the original window. You can barely hear the BQE. It’s a great solution.

  3. Interesting point about the noise. It is very hard to shut out. A friend rented on Hicks Street up against the BQE. On the side closer to Cobble Hill proper in a converted fireplace. She was on the top floor last year. She thought that the noise wouldn’t be an issue but, as a local, I told her watch out! Sure enough, she moved out a few months later for that issue. The noise was driving her insane. I can’t imagine how trapped someone would feel if they bought, let alone rented a place up against the BQE.

  4. There are a number of fancy looking converted factory buildings right smack up against the BQE in that neighborhood. I always wondered if they have some kind of special super duper windows that help keep out the noise. Anybody ever been in one? (I know one of them has its official address on Tiffany.)

  5. What about environmental clean up? I mean those gas tanks were in the ground for a long, long, time right next to the rumbling BQE. Don’t you think the soil would be pretty toxic?
