The new signs that just went up at 80 Dekalb do a nice job of telling passers-by about the residential tower that’s being built on the site. Conspicuously absent, though, is any mention of the name Ratner.

  1. In some parts of the country and abroad, statute requires that developers/applicants post signs explaining what it is that they are applying or approved to do. Although liquor and sidewalk cafe license applicants (and perhaps others) have to post notices, I am not aware of any requirement for development projects to explain themselves. (The number for the BEST Squad serves a whole different purpose.)

5:17’s point about renderings is valid. But even more subtle is the semi-official quality of the sign. ‘The name of this project is, semi-colon, 80 DeKalb.’ Eww, ahh. And who wrote the text in the center on the white ground? It’s brilliant! It reads like statuatory boiler-plate, but I believe it is entirely counterfeit. If this was in any way official, there would at the very least be instructions to call 311 with complaints or concerns. Instead, you get a phone number for Forest City Ratner. (I did a reverse directory look-up.) I really hate to say it, but you’ve got to tip your hat to how well FCR has mastered contemporary double-speak.

  2. Glad somebody’s got their “thinking cap” on. 4:21 is, of course dead on. FC (FOREST CITY) RATNER anyone??? If it were a site in England/Europe (the land of Football Clubs/FC’s) perhaps there could be some justifiable “confusion” as to the owner/developer. A new FC Stadium is getting built and I didn’t even know it??! Here in BKNY??? I’m “surprised” it was even mentioned as a mystery…
