A reader who lives in the Cathedral building on the corner of Washington and Atlantic wrote in yesterday to give us an update on the progress, or lack thereof, at 541-545 Washington Avenue, the 100,000-square-foot Stephen B. Jacobs-designed residential development in the middle of the block. So how’s it going? “Some of the bricks on the walkway to our front door that are nearest to the construction site are caving in,” she writes. “I’m just praying that I won’t come home to a collapsed building next week.” Yup, that would suck. As for the 7-story, 63-unit building itself, no renderings have appeared on the architect’s website yet. Anyone seen or heard anything yet?

The rat is there and so are the very noisy guys who set him up. Last week they screamed through a megaphone at 7 am to announce the alleged non union status of the construction workers. The police were there for several days after that (one guy took a swing at another) and now the racket they were creating has finally subsided. They made more noise than the construction workers! The community will never support their efforts if they keep showing such a lack of respect for us and the peace and quiet we are entitled to. We’re not building anything so why are they punishing us? Also that rat is pretty silly and does not instill fear – just laughter.
I live in the cathedral building next door and a couple of days ago when I left my house for work I saw that union workers had set up the infamous enourmous inflatable rat right in front of the site. I haven’t noticed much construction activity since.
As much as I’m going to miss the cacaphony of construction 6 mornings a week when this is done, I’m even more thrilled they’ll be getting rid of my pesky sunlight.
I think this is a great location for a nicely done building (and seven stories is a good height – not much taller than the five story rowhouses it backs onto, or the large and lovely former school/rectory next store). It is close to the subway the rest of Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights. I welcome the addition and live nearby. I just hope it is done in an aesthetically pleasing way.
What a f,,k are you talking about Manny ???? this firm has designed pretty awsome buildings and also done nice renovations for landmarked ones, the photo is probably of a month ago, I passed by this morning and it looks like much more has been done to it, anyway I hope your beautiful building will still be up when you go back home!
This project is doomed from the start. Sorry but no way will this have the charm of the condos next door and the location is pretty horrible and busy for new construction prices.
Those backyards are going to feel pretty dark when this is done.
