502 New York Ave: Not So Bad? Eh, Pretty Bad
We received another development submission from a reader (keep ’em coming, folks). This one happens to be at 502 New York Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. We received another development submission from a reader (keep ’em coming, folks). This one happens to be at 502 New York Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. (Let’s just say we’d be pleased as punch if this discussion could stay on track about the development and design without yet another digression into how safe the nabe is.) Anyway, here’s what the reader had to say about the new structure:
Certainly the design is not a paradigm of tasteful restraint, but you can see that at least an effort has been made to build something of some quality – not a Fedders box in sight, or any of those window cages so common on other buildings in Hassidic areas. And while the juliette balconies on the front may not be suitable for religious use (except for the top ones), the back has three big, staggered balconies for Sukkoth.
The photo at top right shows a view of the construction site next door to 502 on the NW corner of Lefferts Ave and New York Avenue; at bottom left is a for-sale sign on the lot across the street from 502.
Comment: Looks like a veritable building boom is underway in PLG!
The gates on the windows has nothing to do with SUKKOT or religious, it is for safety of the kids and most of that gates have a door with a lock (that we keep they key close to window, [and even with out a key how difficult is it for the FD to open a small lot?]) for emergencies.
I’m just trying to understand something. The bars on the windows are for safey of the children? I just never knew what it served for?
Regardless of everyone’s comments regarding fire. I had no idea what the bars on the windows were used for.
Thanks
Demographics and statistics are not mud-slinging. Since when are simple facts an insult? Just because the people you know wouldn’t have 8-10 kids doesn’t mean everyone is like them, or more to the point- there are plenty of ways for a population to grow rapidly without necessarily having big families in the purely statistical sense. You don’t even have a small statistical sampling, unless you know 100’s of women. All he said were that the Satmars, and Black and Hispanic populations also have large families. It was not a judgement call. So where’s the mud??
Bx2Bklyn – Huh? The mud was slung by Ron. I just called him out on it based on the people I know. But you are right about one thing, Brownstoner is not about petty backs and forths. As you were…
Anon 10:08- don’t go there. Every group has its social problems and you don’t need to start an ethnic mud-slinging match. This is not what Brownstoner set this site up for.
I would love to know where Ron -04 gets his statistics from. All of the black women I know could not imagine having 8 children.
Hey anon at 2:17, I’m sure your family is from Bed-stuy, but they moved from that area a long time ago, as well as other white people from crown heights. And why? The spillover of a certain group of people.
All I was saying was that the when the discussion of the hassidic community comes up on this blog, it seems that people here seem to make negative comments about “them” and it is acceptable. As if they don’t like that the orthodox communities are expanding in the area.(see post from anon@ 11:30am) Of course not everyone does, but that is what the above thread seemed to be.
Amd relating to the large birth rate by the lubavitch or satmar jews, blacks and spanish people also have large families with 8-10 children. Although they may not necessarily all be from one father and they may be of the “new type of family”.
People always are threatened by people who live there lives different than they do. If it were other minorities involved no one would stand for it. And yes, I am also jewish.
Thanks anonymous 7:30. I realize you didn’t. Of course you are right, Lubavitcher are Jewish but I always worry when people treat us like one homogenous group. We don’t do that with churches and denominations, we don’t do that with Muslims. So in general you are right (where did you get your figures from? just interested) I would not want Jewish people to be defined by the more extreme groups.
anon 7:02- I have no argument that a fire hazard is a fire hazard and I am not condoning it at all. I’m just pointing out why it may have been allowed. Frankly, the cages and balconies are an indication that children are being looked after. In general, Hasids do take very good care of their children, and love them intensely. There are a lot of things that get “overlooked” if a religious organization or beliefs are involved. Doctors and pharmacists are allowed to interfere with your medical treatment and care if they don’t agree with it. Churches and mosques can blast prayers and bells into the air as loudly as they want, blue laws that made it difficult for Jewish businesses for many years despite their unconstitutionality- there’s plenty of unfairness to go around for all of us. That said- my own opinion is that if it endangers people (fire hazards, mohel techniques that infect babies, refusal to dispense a prescription or treatment, fatwas, refusing all treatment except prayer) should not be allowed, Constitution or not. (I expect to be trounced for that one!)
Bx2Bklyn it was not my intention to offend but correct me if i’m wrong but aren’t the Lubavitch Jewish? If so my point still stands. As for the Jewish population they still have the highest birth rate in the borough. Now I do understand that there are different sects/groups within the Jewish faith. My point still stands the Jewish community is expanding at a rate faster than any other group, white, black, asian etc.
